Toxic Household Cleaning Products to be Aware Of:
A report by the US Environmental Protection agency suggested that the air quality within homes may actually be up to 5 times more polluted than the air quality found outside them. They believe that home cleaning materials may play a big part in this imbalance. Just because you wear gloves when cleaning, does not prevent harmful toxic chemicals from being sprayed into the air, where they can be inhaled. Here is a short list of some of the harmful ingredients present in many regular household cleaning products.
Ammonia This is present in the vast majority of ordinary home cleaning products, such as bathroom and toilet cleaners. If you have ever used one of these sprays, and felt a tickle in the back of your throat, there is good reason Ammonia irritates the eyes, throat and lungs. When more than on cleaning product containing ammonia is used at a time, chloramine can be produced, which is highly toxic and poisonous.
Butoxyethanol You will find this listed as an ingredient in oven cleaners and sometimes stain removers. Not only does it irritate the eyes and skin, but research has show links with fertility problems.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate A common ingredient in washing up liquids and laundry detergents, this is another compound which irritates the skin, and leads to a toxic environment in the home.
Coal tar Dyes This is added to household cleaning products not to aid in their effectiveness, but to give them a more colourful appearance in order to sell more of the product. They can be found in many sorts of home cleaning products, and are a synthetic which comes from petrochemicals. By themselves, the synthetic dyes are carcinogens which are associated with cancer, but when contaminated by heavy metals like lead, they can also cause damage to the nervous system.
Harming the Home Environment and Wider Environment
Using these toxic household cleaning products doesn't just have a negative effect in the home environment, it also harms the greater environment. Using these products releases the toxins in them to the household airspace, and then into the general atmosphere when doors and windows are opened.
Additionally, when toilet and bathroom cleaners are used, the chemicals in them get flushed away, where they seep into the environment. If this wasn't enough, they empty containers are often buried in a landfill site, where not only does the plastic not bio-degrade, but residual chemicals leek into the soil.

If you care about the heath of your family and yourself, you should aim to reduce the exposure you all have to dangerous chemicals. One way, is to exchange using synthetic household cleaners for green, environmentally friendly ones. Most supermarkets now offer ranges of green cleaning products, and they are just as effective at cleaning as the health damaging, toxic ones.
